ANATOMY OF A DREAM

In the early morning mist
The Architect's last wish
Stands alone on a distant cliff
Small figures stand frozen
Upon the street
At right angles
Like statues in a DeChirico dream
Detached and contemplating a scream
As a symbol from the past
Swings by on the pendulum's arc
Seat covers fade in the dark
Split second timing gone at last
While the Messenger tries to hide
From the message scrawled
On the signpost
Pointing the way
Along the path that never was
Taken by so many
Seems it's gone full circle
And the flowers bloom once again
In the most unusual places
Those statues remain
All of the their faces have been replaced
And all of the names erased
As they go walking through the scene
Straight through the gates
And staring at the tie-dyed sunset
Setting over the Bell Tower
It appears that the Hunchback has fled the scene
And Basil Rathbone has forgotten his lines
While Esmeralda can be seen running
Down along the Seine
After shadows chasing hoops
Nearby the shoreline
Where all the people stand and stare
As one more monurnent goes up in flames
Appearing like a firestorm upon the horizon
Who will remember its name
