THE LAST MIDNIGHT

Images speaking to no one
Voices echoing within Van Gogh's mind
Warrior wings and daddy
Floating across the room in white
Like Napoleon's Elba
Quiet late at night
While staring back
Mona Lisa responds with her smile
One eye hidden
The other focused on the hourglass
As headlines pasted on her chest
Proclaim far-reaching changes
While words closer to home float
And a red cross is entwined
With thoughts left behind by Wordman
Like an X to mark the spot
Where his heart has gone
In search of Cassandra
Who's hiding with the dawn
Waiting to rise again
As Columbus ponders conversations
With Ferdinand and Isabella
Seeing the dark stare
Of the lone wolf
Frozen within a lavender mist
Recalling names and places
Nightly news
With unforgettable faces
Etched within memory's graveyard
Where thoughts like tombstones mark
Both the end and the beginning
And the number 5 struggles
Trying to make sense of it
As the swift leopard sprints
Out of the starting gate
Going in search of his fate
Along the mobius strip encircling
The Looking Glass lost
Behind the last midnight
